Blade Maintenance: A Clean, Dry, Ready-to-Use Routine
Organise blade cleaning, disinfection, lubrication and storage so a used blade never gets mistaken for a ready one.
The practical answer
Cleaning removes debris; disinfection and lubrication have different jobs. Follow the product labels and your clipper manual, then store dry, inspected blades separately from used equipment.
Give every blade a clear status
Create three labelled spaces: ready, used and service required. After a groom, put the blade straight into the used area. It should only return to the ready area after the complete care process. This small habit reduces the chance of forgetting whether a blade has been cleaned when the salon gets busy.
Follow the care instructions in order
- Switch off and disconnect equipment as required by its manual. Remove loose hair with the appropriate brush.
- Clean using a method approved for the blade and clipper. Do not immerse an electrical tool or assume a blade is washable.
- Use a compatible disinfectant according to its dilution, contact-time and rinse or drying instructions. A quick wipe is not automatically an adequate disinfection step.
- Dry as directed, inspect for damage and apply the specified blade oil at the recommended points.
- Remove excess product as instructed before the blade touches a dog. Mark the blade ready only when the process is complete.
Cleaning, appropriate disinfection and lubrication each have a role in blade care. Follow the method and products specified for your equipment; a routine for a different clipper may not be suitable.
Do not confuse the bottles

Store for the next groom
Protect teeth from knocks and keep blades away from the wet bathing area. Do not seal a damp blade into a case. Give each blade an ID and record sharpening or repairs. If you drop one, quarantine it for inspection even when the damage is not obvious at first glance.
Build a realistic end-of-day check
Count the blades that need attention before the next day’s appointments. If several remain in the service area, resolve that gap before filling the diary. Keep care instructions close to the workstation so another team member can follow the same process without guessing.
Ready means ready
- Cleaned and disinfected using compatible products.
- Dry and lubricated as instructed.
- No visible damage or unresolved performance fault.
- Stored with protected teeth and a clear identity.
